Bad Week Start For Mail Services: MobileMe, Gmail Down

We probably got used by now with getting good news, rapidly followed by bad news from Apple. If yesterday Jobs announced complete success for the App Store, this time, as you might have guessed, MobileMe came back in the spotlight, but this time, unaccompanied by apologies or details from Apple.

Here’s what happened: on Monday, the Apple Support forum looked something similar to a battle field – man down, or better yet, mail server down! And while some users complained about it, at the same time waiting patiently for things to get back to normal, others seemed simply disappointed that the MobileMe story happens again.

“MobileMe members may be unable to access MobileMe Mail. Service will be restores ASAP. We apologize for any inconvenience” was the MobileMe message. This time, we only have the users’ side, and we’re still waiting for Apple to respond to one big question: WHY (again)?

If we go back two weeks ago, Apple’s blog said something like this: “We have completed restoring Mail Service … Thank you all for your extreme patience during this trying time … By completing this restoration of Mail services, we hope we have put the vast majority of MobileMe Mail problems behind us and can now focus on improving other aspects of this new ambitious project.”

With that being said, it looks like the Mail service still needs some work, users need to learn to be even more patient (if that’s possible) and Apple will get back to them as soon as possible.

Ok, it only lasted for two hours, but that’s not the issue here. It seems that these outages have multiplied lately, and Apple continues to struggle with the MobileMe service.

Jobs himself admitted that the service was “a mess” as it failed to provide Apple users with quality services. In an e-mail sent to Apple employees, Jobs admitted to rushing into things, as they decided to make a triple-launch: MobileMe, App Store and iPhone.

He went further saying MobileMe is “simply not up to Apple standards,” although engineers have been working hard to fix all issues. Launching it at a later date would have been wiser, as they would have had more time to get things working properly.

“The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services. And learn we will,” Jobs explained. “The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of the year.”

This means one thing: PATIENCE! On the same note, Monday wasn’t a good day for Google either, as their Gmail service was down as well. The several-hour outage grew dissatisfaction among millions of users, but hey, they said they’re sorry!

All we can hope for at this point is to really begin to see some improvements in e-mail services. Although we’ve only given two examples, Apple and Google aren’t the only ones fighting instability in their mail services on a regular basis.
