Baby in Critical Condition after His Oxygen Hood Caught Fire

A 12 hours old baby who was being kept inside an open-topped bassinet under a warmer at Mercy Hospital in suburban Coon Rapids is in critical condition after oxygen ignited inside a special hood he was wearing on Tuesday.

David Kanihan said in a statement released by Allina Hospital and Clinics, which owns Mercy that the baby was wearing an oxygen hood, a device that fits over the face to supply additional oxygen, when something cause the gas to ignite. Nurses who were staying with the baby immediately put out the fire.

The baby, who suffered second- and third-degree burns over nearly a fifth of his body, including his head, shoulders, part of his face and the tops of his hands, was taken to the neonatal intensive care unit at Hennepin County Medical Center. According to hospital officials on Wednesday, the baby is in critical condition but stable, the Associated Press reports.

Dr. Leslie Smith said the infant would survive the incident and would be able to use his fingers and hands and should have a normal life.

The baby, named Maverick, weighing 8 pounds, was born three weeks earlier and was kept under supervision at the hospital, and administered additional oxygen. He is currently treated with fluids and medications and is breathing with the help of a ventilator, Smith told the AP.

“This is our first experience with burns at this age,” Dr. George Peltier, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon at the Burn Center said. He added that it was too early to pronounce if the baby would need surgery for skin grafts.

The statement released by Allina Hospital said the hospital had never confronted with such an event. Officials at Minnesota state fire department are currently investigating the cause of the incident and evaluating the equipment used by the hospital in this case.

The newborn’s family is not yet considering legal action, as they are more interested in their baby’s health for the moment, Chris Messerly, their lawyer said, the source reported. The investigators have not released the name of the family, who also has a daughter.
