Baby Suffering Burns while in Incubator Seems to Be Doing Well

The newborn baby, who suffered burns when a fire broke out inside the oxygen hood he was wearing back in January, is home and improving everyday, although his parents said he still struggles.

Maverick Thomas Werth was born January 21 and, twelve hours later, he nearly died when a fire started under the hood of his incubator at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids. Three weeks premature, he had been receiving oxygen because of breathing problems.

The baby suffered second-and third-degree burns over nearly a fifth of his body, including his head, shoulders, part of his face and the tops of his hands. He was then transported to the neonatal intensive care unit at Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was hospitalized for three weeks, until he went home February 10.

His parents, Melissa and Justin Werth spoke Wednesday for the first time about the trauma they had been through.

“I don’t think there are words to describe seeing your son burned. I was pretty angry. I was just very upset,” Melissa told Kare-11 News.

Now six weeks old, Maverick seems to be doing well although he may still need skin grafts and it is not clear yet how badly he will be scarred.

"Thankfully he's young enough where maybe emotionally he won't remember it, but it shouldn't have happened," said Melissa.

The Werths have not yet taken any legal action and investigators still have no idea about what caused the fire.
