Baby Killed, Mother Wounded in Gary Carjacking, Free Suspect

A 13-month-old boy and his mother were shot in an apparent carjacking Monday night in Gary, officials said.

The shooting was reported around 7:35 p.m. by the woman herself in the 500 block of West 21st Avenue, but authorities were not sure if that was the place where the original carjacking took place, officials with the Lake County coroner's office said early this morning, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Gary Police Lt. Del Stout said the woman was driving a red Ford Explorer north on Virginia Street when a man forced his way into the car around 21st Place.

The woman, 29, identified as Kwana Shaw and her baby, Josiah were found in the 1700 block of Virginia Street. They were transported to The Methodist Hospitals in Gary. The little one was pronounced dead from gunshot wounds to the chin and left pelvic area, according to the coroner’s office.

The mother underwent surgery at the hospital this morning for a gunshot wound. Her condition has not been released.

A witness told police that she saw a man run out of the car, so the Gary SWAT team and the Hobart K-9 unit arrived on scene. The suspect was not located anywhere on Virginia Street where the woman was found. The SWAT team then was dispatched elsewhere.

New information about the case was not available Tuesday morning from police of the hospital.
