A baby was very unlucky when a tornado hit the house where
he and his grandparents were living in, but, at the same time, he was lucky
enough to remain alive after the twister destroyed the house, killing his
grandmother and throwing his grandfather into the yard.
Officials said Friday that the tornado, which hit Central New Hampshire on Thursday, destroyed at least 6
homes and damaged hundreds more along the 20-mile path, the Associated Press
reported. The National Weather Service said that nine towns were severely
affected by the tornado, which had winds of 111 to 135mph.
The 3-month-old baby was living with his grandparents Brenda
Stevens, 57, and Harley Stevens. Authorities said that the grandmother and the
child remained trapped between the home's collapsed first and second stories.
Deerfield Fire Chief Mark Tibbetts said that Harley Stevens went downstairs as
he was worried by the black clouds that were coming closer.
“No more than he got downstairs and it started throwing him
from side to side and rotating him around the house,” Mark Tibbetts said,
reported the Associated Press.
State Fire Marshal William Degnan said that Harley Stevens
“was blown out the side of the building and found in the side yard.” The man
was treated and released. The baby whose cry drew attention, leading to his
rescue, was admitted but there is no information regarding his condition.
Officials said that he survived thanks to some wreckage that
made a pocket, protecting him. His parents were at work and his grandparents
were taking care of him.
The storms that hit New
Hampshire were very violent and caused many damage.
“This was a highly destructive storm causing a tremendous
amount of damage in a short period of time,” Gov. John Lynch said at an evening
briefing.
