A recall was issued Monday for three varieties
of Lean Cuisine frozen chicken dinners after small pieces of blue plastic
material were found in the meat. The Lean Cuisine meals in question are the
Pesto Chicken with Bow Tie Pasta, the Chicken Mediterranean and the Chicken
Tuscan.
The frozen dinners were distributed
nationwide, and Nestle received a complaint from a consumer that has reported an
injury from pieces of plastic found in the food products.
Nestlé Prepared Foods Company in Springville, Utah
announced its decision to recall an estimated 900,000 pounds worth of meals.
Consumers can find out whether their meals
are affected by looking at the bar code or UPC label on the boxes and calling
Lean Cuisine at (800) 993-8625. The USDA has provided a list of production
codes so consumers can check to see if their dinners have been recalled. The
recalled items are: Lean Cuisine Chicken Mediterranean with production codes of
8231595912, 8241595912, 8253595911, 8269595912, 8292595911 or 8296595911 and
use-by dates of September 2010, October 2010 and November 2010, Lean Cuisine
Chicken Tuscan with production codes of 8234595911, 8253595911, 8269595912,
8292595911 or 8296595911 and use-by dates of September 2009, October 2009 or
November 2009, Lean Cuisine Pesto Chicken with Bow Tie Pasta with a production
code of 8280595912 and a use-by date of May 2010.
The USDA has ranked the recall as Class I. “It could cause injury – a piece of plastic that could
cut your mouth, it could scratch your throat,” said Amanda Eamich, spokesperson
for the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Nestlé spokeswoman Roz O'Hearn said the company
believes it has traced the source of the plastic pieces but is currently
working with the other company to verify it. Customers are instructed to return
the products to the store it was purchased for a full refund.
