Two mountain avalanches in Wrightwood,
California resulted in the death of one skier Friday, while two others were
rescued and taken to the hospital, a spokesperson of the San Bernardino County
Fire Department said.
The 23-year-old skier was identified as an
employee of the Mountain High ski area, named Michael McKay, Tim Wessel, a
division chief for the San Bernardino County Fire Department said,
according to the Los Angeles Times. He
was rescued from the snow, but he died at about 4:30 p.m. at the Desert Valley
Medical Center.
"He was trapped in the initial avalanche.
Two of the people walked, but the man was still trapped and it took L.A. county
search and rescue and ski patrol to find him. It took about an hour and a half
to get him out," Wessel was quoted by The Times.
According to San Bernardino County fire
officials, McKay was skiing with two friends who have not yet been located.
Another skier was found by the searchers in a second avalanche late Friday,
taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition. He has not been
identified.
At least four avalanches were reported in the
last 10 hours, a spokesperson for Mountain High Resort said, according to the
MSNBC. Two of them were reported on a mountain road and two in a canyon area.
Wessel said the avalanches were due to "the
amount of snow that has fallen over the past several days."
According to the National Weather Service
meteorologist Richard Thompson, up to 8 inches of rain would fall in the hills
outside Los Angeles starting Saturday evening. He also added that the area ski
resorts could be pounded by as much as 3 feet of powder.
"There's going to be very significant
impacts. Debris and mud-flows will be a great concern," Thompson said.
