The movie industry has been bombarded lately with action flicks and action hero remakes and it was about time a romantic movie made an appearance on the scene. The movie ‘Australia” which is opening on Wednesday is said to be the romantic movie of this season, starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, recently voted the sexiest man of the year. The movie takes place in a 1939 Second World War reality and it focuses on a love story between an aristocratic lady, played by Kidman, and a tough, cattle man, who is his own boss, played by Jackman.
It seems that this movie has everything, from love and romance, to Second World War action. It has drama and the plot seems a bit exaggerated, if not a bit crowded. There is so much going on the screen, that it is almost certain that some will criticize “Australia” pretty harshly.
Baz Luhrmann, the director of “Australia”, tried too hard to stage a grand romance, but the movie seems unfinished and gives the impression that it needs more time in the editing room. Luhrmann hasn’t made a movie since 2001’s “Moulin Rouge”, for which Nicole Kidman was nominated for an Academy Award.
The movie has a lot of potential and it will manage to create some mixed opinions related to its story and how the actors managed to give life to their characters. Kidman’s role seems a bit superficial, but maybe this is the idea. She is a lady from England, with a serious moral backbone that ends up in the muddy lands of Australia. All in all, for those wanting a movie that is not about guns or flying ultra men, “Australia” is the movie you should see.
