Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix Recalled over Salmonella Concerns

The Quaker Oats Co. said Tuesday that it was recalling a limited number of Aunt Jemima Pancake & Waffle Mix Products over potential salmonella contamination from raw or undercooked ingredients.

Salmonella, a food borne illness, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail in elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The company said a small quantity of Aunt Jemima Pancake & Waffle Mix: Original, Original Complete, and Buttermilk Complete are included in the recall, the Business Week reports. No other Aunt Jemima or Quaker products are affected.

The recalled products are sold in 2-pounds and 5-pound boxes with best before dates of February 8, 2009 through February 16, 2009 stamped on the top.

The company said that no illnesses have been reported so far. There is a very low risk of illness when preparation directions on box are followed and product is not consumed raw or undercooked. Salmonella bacteria are killed at a temperature of 160 degrees F.

The company also asked any consumer with the recalled products to return them to the place they were purchased for a full refund.

Consumers in need of more information can contact the Quaker Oats Company directly at 1-800-407-2247.
