Audrey Hepburn Dress Sells For $234,000

The cute cocktail dress Audrey Hepburn wore in the 1961 movie "Breakfast at Tiffany’s" was auctioned in New York on Wednesday exceeding expectations after selling for $US192,000 ($234,000).

The pink, sleeveless outfit worn in the scene where Holly Golightly finds out her brother has died, was purchased by a private European bidder, Christie’s auction house said in a statement.

Other items sold at the memorabilia auction include a costume worn by Barbra Streisand in the 1968 film “Funny Girl," which went for $US33,600 ($41,000) and Marilyn Monroe's script for "Something's Got To Give," with the actress' handwritten notes, which sold for $19,200.

Items from the estate of comedian Stan Laurel made over $100,000.

These included his trademark bowler hats, a set of bow ties and a folder with joke ideas: "Rather be pregnant than have tooth pulled? Make up your mind lady, so I'll know which way to tilt the chair," he wrote.

Late last year, the iconic Givenchy black dress which Audrey Hepburn also wore in the movie that brought her worldwide recognition was auctioned for a sum six times higher than the estimated price.

The dress was sold to a telephone bidder for $807,000, while expected to fetch between $98,000 and $138,000 as part of a sale of film and television memorabilia.
