Who is not into “He’s Just Not That Into You”? Certainly not moviegoers, as young women packed theaters this weekend, thus boosting the romantic comedy straight to No. 1 at the North American box office.
The Ken Kwapis-helmed production starring big names such as Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck, Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Connelly finished the weekend with approximately $27.5 million in ticket sales, according to early studio estimates. In spite of the fact that audiences were generally dominated by female presence during the movie’s opening weekend, next weekend is expected to witness more gender uniformity, said Dan Fellman, the Warner Bros. distribution chief, as cited by the Los Angeles Times.
Twentieth Century Fox’s action flick “Taken” saw a strong weekend as well, since it came in second with earnings of about $20.3 million, which helped the film take its total gross to $53.3 million, according to box office tracker Nielsen EDI.
“Coraline,” the 3-D animated film from Focus Features that depicts the imagination bound story of a little girl who steps into an alternate universe, registered an impressive opening with $16.3 in ticket sales. However, Sony Pictures’ Steve Martin adventure, “Pink Panther II,” tripped up and came in fourth with only $12 million during its debut weekend, according to studio estimates.
“Paul Blart: Mall Cop” rounded out the top five with $11 million, while the weekend’s other big release, the sci-fi movie “Push,” saw a No. 6 debut with $10.2 million.
