An Auburn
University freshman was
shot on a highway and her car was discovered on campus engulfed in flames, only
miles away.
Auburn police said that they were investigating Tuesday's
death of Lauren Burk as a homicide. They have interviewed some subjects but nobody
was arrested by midnight Wednesday.
Police Capt. Tom Stofer said: "As soon as we know more
we might release it, but what information we have now we're holding it close to
our chest," the Associated Press reports.
Burk, 18, graduated last year from Walton High School in Marietta,
according to Jim Hardin, director of the Auburn University Office of Judicial
Affairs.
She was found wounded by a gunshot on Alabama
Highway 147 around 9 p.m. Tuesday, almost five miles north of the campus.
Burk died Tuesday night at East Alabama
Medical Center.
According to Auburn police, her car, a Honda
Civic, was found inflames at the Hinton Field parking lot near a dormitory on
campus.
Burk was a member of the Delta Gamma
sorority and didn’t live on campus.
Stofer said that Gov. Bob Riley's
office is offering a reward of $10,000 in the case.
Auburn university officials issued a statement for its
nearly 25,000 students saying that there is "no
indication of additional danger to campus or student safety."
Even so, the school announced that security
on campus has been increased.
Delta Gamma, Burk’s sorority, released a statement on
University’s website saying:
"Considering the unexpected and
disturbing nature of the situation, the women of Delta Gamma have reacted with
immense concern. Delta Gammas across the country offer hope and friendship to
Lauren's family and all who have been affected by this tragedy."
Burk was a popular girl at her high school
and she was on the lacrosse team. She was also liked by the students at the
faculty.
Her parents are preparing for her funeral
for Sunday. Her mother said that her daughter didn’t deserve to die like this
and she hopes for police to find the killer.
