U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey is said to feel better after his collapse while holding a speech at the Federalist Society's annual dinner. According to a spokeswoman, medical tests didn’t reveal any signs of a stroke or cardiac complications.
The attorney general is “very active,” “very alert,” as well as “very ready to leave” after the incidence that occurred last night in Washington, when he collapsed during a speech, said Gina Talamona of the Justice Department. As stated by eyewitness Abigail Thernstrom, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, after collapsing, 67-year-old Mukasey lay on the stage for approximately10 minutes.
He has been immediately transported at the George Washington University Hospital where doctors performed a series of tests. Despite feeling better, Mukasey is to undergo additional medical tests.
There are no signs suggesting “that he suffered a stroke or any heart-related incident," Talamona said. "It really appears to be a fainting spell."
President Bush called Mr. Mukasey around 7 a.m. in order to wish him to recover soon, according to Dana Perino, White House Press Secretary for the President. She described the general attorney as "sounding well" and added that he was receiving "excellent care" at the hospital.
Mr. Mukasey will be released from the medical unit as soon as all tests are done, she told reporters. Physicians at the George Washington University Hospital said he was “fit.”
