Former Atlantic City Mayor Bob Levy pleaded guilty Thursday
to have misled the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in order to be awarded
more financial benefits.
According to U.S. Attorney’s office in New Jersey, he increased his veteran’s
benefits with $24,683 in four years.
The Democrat Robert Levy, 60 admitted before the U.S.
District Judge Jerome Simandle that he lied to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs about
being awarded two medals due to his good abilities as a soldier in the Vietnam
war. During hearing his accusations, Levy did not say more than: "Yes,
your honor, ” the Associated Press reports.
In January 2003, he claimed that he was granted the Combat
Infantryman Badge and the Parachutists Badge and that he made a number of
parachute jumps, which he did not.
According to the documents released by the U.S. Attorney,
the former mayor is likely to serve six months in a federal prison, after his
sentencing scheduled in February 2008, CNN reports. He also agreed that he
would not appeal his sentence in more than six months.
Robert Levy was elected in November 2005 to be the mayor of Atlantic City, one of the
most politically corrupted cities, the AP reports.
He resigned on October 10, after his questionable disappearing
for three weeks in late September from the political scene. No one knew the
reason of his disappearance at that time, but sources say that he spent time in
a substance abuse and mental health treatment center in northern New Jersey.
However, his lawyer Edwin Jacobs said that his client was
not charged for doing anything wrong in his role as mayor of Atlantic City, CNN reports.
