Drivers
will have to change their route before they arrive at 14th Street
Bridge, because authorities have closed the bridge on Tuesday and they planned
to keep it that way about 18 months. The bridge is closed between Fowler and
Williams streets.
That’s
right, it’s construction time!
“This
project has been a long time in coming. We've been working on the utility
portion of it for a little over a year now,” said Georgia DOT spokesperson
Crystal Paulk-Buchanan, according to WXIA-TV.
As
an alternative route, drivers who are traveling east or west over Atlanta's
Downtown Connector should take 17th or 10th streets or North Avenue. Also, Williams
Street has only one single lane between 10th and 16th streets and Techwood
Drive is closed between 16th and 10th streets, reported Atlanta Journal
Constitution.
Paulk
said that contractors will be dismantling the bridge all morning long. They
will only take small pieces. The bigger pieces will be removed by the crews later
this week until there will be nothing more left. Then, like a Lego game, they
will rebuild it.
The
bridge will have two travel lanes and a turn lane on each side. There will also
be sidewalks 15 feet wide.
I’m
sure the wait will be worthwhile as the bridge will be higher and longer.
The
cost was estimated at $88.5 million.
