Early Sunday, at an Atlanta hospital a girl
was born. Not just any girl, as she is the first grandchild of an important
personality of the 20th century.
Yolanda Reneé King is the daughter of Arndrea
Waters King and Martin Luther King III. Yolanda is the first grandchild of Martin
Luther King, the Baptist minister who was the leader of the American civil
rights movement.
According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the girl was
born at about 6:47 a.m. at Atlanta Northside Hospital. Family
spokesman, Sandra Tarver, said that the girl’s weight
was 7 pounds and 5 ounces and that both mother and daughter were in a good
condition.
The parents named the baby girl after her
father’s older sister, Yolanda Denise King, who died in May 2007.
Martin Luther King III was very excited
about her daughter, saying that she was a “precious gift from God,” and that it
was “the happiest day of our lives,” reported to the Atlanta Journal
Constitution.
Martin Luther King III and Arndrea Waters married two years
ago in Santa Barbara, California, shortly after his mother died in January 2006.
Their marriage was not made public until last winter. They also announced that
they were expecting a child.
