At Toronto Film Festival, The Unsurprising Movie About Paris Hilton

“Paris, Not France” is the latest film featuring Paris Hilton which is actually a documentary about the life and the implications of being a Hilton.

The film was directed by Adria Petty, daughter of rocker Tom Petty, and premiered Tuesday night at the Toronto International Film Festival. This is the result of a year’s documentation on Hilton's life, work, family and friends made by the director.

Petty was initially hired to make a film to go along with the release of Hilton’s 2006 album "Paris." That’s why the film may sometimes appear as out of date.

She has evolved since then and has gone through some marking experiences such as her infamous 2007 stint in jail. The movie lacks time stamps and because of this it unfortunately falls into something too general, inappropriate for a biography. The sound recording on some of the interviews is very poor. All in all it doesn’t appear to be a professional film.

The 68-minute film that mixes black and white and color footage is desperately striving to recreate the atmosphere from Madonna’s “Truth or dare?”

Petty herself mentioned the French New Wave as an influence apart from Madonna’s 1991 documentary. But it turned out to be a mess.

The movie also features interviews with Hilton's parents, sister Nicky, publicist Elliott Mintz and personalities such as Donald Trump.

Accompanied by her boyfriend, rocker Benji Madden of the band Good Charlotte, Hilton walked on the red carpet at the film’s premiere. She left straight away after she had given some post movie viewing autographs. She didn’t say much, though.
