At Least 25 Persons Killed in Afghanistan

At least twenty-five people died in clashes and bomb attacks across Afghanistan, security officials informed Tuesday.

Two police officers lost their lives and four were injured early Tuesday when a suicide attacker detonated a vehicle packed with explosives in northern Afghanistan, police forces said.

Security forces noticed a suspicious vehicle in Kunduz city and ordered the driver to stop, but the suspected militant driving the van set off the deadly charge hidden inside, as policemen attempted to search the vehicle.

Numerous police forces were sent arround the capital of Kunduz province to check for potential bombers, after intelligence reports warned insurgents are planning a new wave of suicide attacks in the region.

The northern part of Afghanistan is relatively peaceful, compared to southern areas where attacks and clashes occur on a daily basis. On May 19, six civilians and three soldiers of the coalition forces were killed by a suicide attack in Kunduz. About 3,000 servicemen from Germany are stationed in the region.

Taliban rebels carried out an attack in the south-eastern province of Paktika late Monday, killing a policeman and wounding two others. According to reports from the region, the insurgents targeted a district police chief, but the official escaped unharmed.

Renewed clashes occurred in the southern Uruzgan province Tuesday morning between Taliban militants and coalition forces. A large group of insurgents attacked a military base with mortars, rocket propelled grenades and small fire arms, prompting the coalition and Afghan forces inside to retaliate.

At least ten insurgents were killed after coalition aircrafts opened fire on the militant group, the US army informed, adding no casualties were reported among civilians or security forces.

More than 12 militants died during a fire exchange with local and coalition troops in the Kandahar province Monday afternoon. According to a statement released by the US military, militants opened fire on a joint patrol and sparked an intense firefight.

Again coalition aircrafts were called in to assist the ground troops and used “precision guided munitions on one compound that contained a large Taliban concentration engaging the combined force with a heavy volume of machine gun fire.”

The same statement informed that no injuries or deaths were recorded among Afghan or foreign forces.
