Right fielder Hunter Pence
suffered hands and knees lacerations on Monday night, after an incident with a
sliding glass door, a spokesman for the Houston Astros confirmed. The accident occurred
one day after the 25-year-old major league player reported at the Osceola
County Stadium for training.
The team’s spokesman confirmed
he was rushed to the local hospital on Monday night, and was fully examined by
the team physician, David Lintner, the following morning. There are still
unknown details on what exactly happened, but further information will be
released as soon as possible.
“For Hunter I hate to see
something like this happen,” Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane said,
according to the Houston Chronicle. “It could have been much more serious. He
could have cut a tendon or an artery. We are told he should be back within a
wee,” he added.
Pence made a major league debut
with the Houston Astros less than a year ago, in April 2007, and has remained
on the team ever since. As a rookie, Pence hit .322, had 17 homeruns and 69 RBI
in a total of 108 games.
In 2007, Pence, who is 6’4’’
tall and weight 210 pounds, became National League Player of the Week, along
with Jose Valverde from the Arizona Diamondbacks, and in May the same year he
became National League Rookie of the Month.
