In late October Gas Powered
Games, the developer behind the PC real-time strategy game Supreme Commander,
announced a surprising news: that a video gaming console version of SupCom, as
Supreme Commander is also known among gamers, was being worked on.
At the time,
Chris Taylor, the founder of Gas Powered Games and the man behind other popular
games such as Dungeon Siege and Total Annihilation, said that Microsoft’s Xbox
360 video gaming console would be the most likely destination for the console
version of the real-time strategy game. Chris Taylor argued this choice by
saying that the Xbox 360 console is “the platform of choice for moving stuff
from the PC”. But, SupCom is good "stuff" and some voices had already started
to ask themselves whether launching an Xbox 360 version of the game would be a
wise move.
Supreme Commander is seen by the
gamers as the "spiritual sequel” of Total Annihilation. Developed by Gas
Powered Games, it was published by THQ in February 2007 and it became a very
popular game.
But although for some people Gas Powered
Games’ idea seems odd, yesterday SupCom was re-confirmed for Microsoft’s Xbox
360 console. The developer also announced that the game wouldn’t be published
by THQ anymore, but by Aspyr Media. Furthermore, the British Columbia-based
studio Hellbent Games would also be involved in bringing the SupCom game to
Microsoft’s video gaming console.
The game’s creators will have to
work to adapt the PC game’s interface to work with a standard controller, to
add exclusive new units and tweaked maps and additional multiplayer modes. There
is a lot of work to do, but the game was announced to be launched in early 2008.
"We believe that we’ve raised the bar for RTS gaming on the PC and now,
co-developing with Hellbent Games, we know that we can do the same on consoles,” Chris Taylor said yesterday.
SupCom will be Gas Powered Games’
first game for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 console.
