The battle to become the owner of the first Twitter account that has 1 million followers has ended. It was a clash between the old TV, represented now by CNNbrk (CNN breaking news), and the new kid on the block Ashton Kutcher.
Ashton Kutcher won the battle to become the first Twitter millionaire. Surrounded by his older wife Demi Moore, Soleil Moon Frye and with Sean “Diddy” Combs backing him via phone, the actor crossed the 1 million followers milestone. It happened at about 11 p.m. Pacific time.
“Where’s the champagne, where’s the champagne,” the actor said on his Ustream.TV web feed shortly before reaching the 1 millionth follower.
“We’ve gotta pop the cork on this folks.”
The popular actor started this a few months ago when he created his account and had a few followers. Soon he started adding thousands of followers per day, helped by his wife Demi More. It’s a nice story of success and I congratulate Ashton Kutcher for kicking CNN’s ass. I’m also glad that he plans to celebrate this victory not only by popping a bottle of champagne, but by donating 10,000 bed nets to fight malaria in Africa.
CNN, which lost by about 1,200 followers congratulated the actor via an update on the CNNbrk Twitter account.
“Congrats @aplusk. Ashton Kutcher is the first twitter account to reach 1MM followers,” the update wrote.
However, it would be 1 million times more interesting to see the first non-celebrity Twitter account that draws 1 million followers. Celebrities have a great advantage over non-celebs because they can self promote far better.
