Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA), a division of Universal Music Group, will become a pioneer by launching iPhone and iPod Touch applications built off a new iPhone framework called Kyte, a turnkey digital media platform that lets companies produce and distribute content online and to mobile devices.
The applications will feature video content from the individual singer, RSS reader that will keep fans of the singer updated with the latest news about the star and a built-in chat feature in which fans can interact and rate the singer’s concerts and tracks.
Interscope said it doesn’t plan to charge money for the applications, but hopes it will record earnings from the ads and links the applications will feature. The links and ads will direct users to the singer's merchandise or their songs on iTunes
Kyte launched its iPhone Apps Framework, a solution that allows Kyte partners to create applications that can include video, live chat, and monetization options with very low costs. Kyte already announced the first five artists from IGA records who have released their applications: The All American Rejects, Soulja Boy, The Pussycat Dolls, Lady Gaga, and Keri Hilson.
Kyte said it hopes that many more partners will follow Interscope’s example. But although Interscope’s apps are free of charge, the future partners won’t necessarily have the same policy, said Kyte's senior communications manager, Ulysses King. The company's iPhone Applications Framework is made from media companies as well, not just for record labels.
