Artie Lange, member of “The Howard Stern Show” since 2001,
apparently blew a fuse in the studio Thursday morning during a quarrel with his
personal assistant and offered his resignation, which Howard Stern accepted.
The hubbub began off the air, with Artie Lange and personal
assistant Teddy contradicting each other in the hallway over financial issues,
reports Newsday’s celebrity blog.
Upon learning of the commotion outside the studio, Howard
Stern invited the two to discuss the situation on the air. Lange expressed his
frustration and anger at Teddy, his personal assistant of two years, generated
by financial issues.
A heated discussion ensued and verbal punches no longer
satisfied Lange, who jumped at Teddy to strike him. Other members in the studio
quickly acted, putting a stop to the situation.
When Lange returned, he said Teddy would be “dead” had he
reached him and he would be in jail, reports Newsday.
Stern replied that Lange’s actions are unacceptable; the comedian
replied that he cannot guarantee to behave better in the future and Stern said
he cannot have Lange in the studio when such situations can arise.
Lange then offered his resignation, which Stern accepted.
This is not the first time that the 40-year-old comedian, who
has made guest appearances on “Rescue Me” and “Entourage,” vows to quit Howard
Stern’s radio show at Sirius. Whether or not he means it this time remains to
be seen.
Stern does not host live shows on Friday and he is on
vacation next week.
While Teddy said Thursday, after Lange had left the studio,
that the initial discussion had been blown out of proportion, Show producer
Gary Dell'Abate and Stern said on the air that they “did not know what to make
of it all.”
