Arson was not ruled out by police regarding the fire at a
German building on Sunday, where nine people lost their lives, including five
children.
According to police, the four-story apartment from Ludwigshafen was home to some
Turkish immigrant families.
The building was attacked two years ago by a Molotov
cocktail, in August 2006.
The fire was blamed by Turkey's Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan and was wondering is racisms was the cause of the fire.
Erdogan said that four policemen and a government official
will come to Germany
to start an investigation of their own.
The German Interior Minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, agreed with
Erdogan to send his own investigators.
Two girls of eight and nine years old witnessed when a man set
something on fire near the building.
Investigators were due to talk to the two girls.
Wednesday state officials will have a wreath-laying ceremony
at the site of the incident in the memory of the victims.
The building went up in flames Sunday afternoon during the
celebration of Carnival. As the fire spread, the wooden staircase gave way and blocked
the residents inside. In their desperation, they threw out their children on
the window into the arms of firefighters and afterwards they jumped themselves
in the rescue nets.
Sixty people were injured during the blaze.
According to German police, the building was home of two
Turkish families, and 24 people were registered as residents. It’s not known
the number of people that were inside at the time of the fire.
One police spokesman said that investigators were not able
to enter the building in fear that it would collapse.
