Just days after former Ramones manager Linda Stein was murdered in her New York home, her personal assistant was arrested in connection with her death.
According to ABC, New York Police Department just announced they arrested Natavia Lowery, 26, after she admitted to bludgeoning her boss to death with a piece of yoga equipment in her Manhattan apartment after Stein refused to stop blowing marijuana in her face.
Lowery, who has a shady past involving identity theft, was charged with second degree murder, New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced at a press conference. She told the police that she struck 62-year-old Stein with a four-pound exercise stick.
Stein, who pioneered the punk-rock scene before turning to real estate, working with celebrity clients like Madonna and Billy Joel, was found dead on October 30 by her daughter at her Manhattan apartment. According to an autopsy, her death was caused by blunt force trauma to the head and neck.
As the investigation continued, and police interviewed people in Stein’s entourage and also searched for physical evidence, they were lead to Lowery whom they questioned repeatedly. Although she initially contacted the police to complain about the media frenzy surrounding her, she eventually confessed the murder.
"Lowery said she was retrieving email for Stein from a computer when Stein approached blowing marijuana smoke in her face yelling at her to hurry," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
"Lowery also claimed that Stein used profanity and derogatory language and she waved an object described as a yoga stick. She grabbed the yoga stick from Stein's hands and struck her with it, six or seven times."
Stein, who was the ex-wife of Seymour Stein, the former president of Sire Records, is credited with booking The Ramones’ July 1976 appearance at the Roundhouse in London, thought to be one of the key moments in the creation of British punk scene.
Known as the "realtor to the stars," Stein will forever be remembered by friends like Madonna and Elton John who recalled Stein's indomitable personality, and her triumph against breast cancer.
"I had a great visit with Linda and Seymour backstage after my show last year at Madison Square Garden, and we of course reminisced about the good old days," Madonna said. "I deeply admired her courage in her battle with breast cancer, as well as her career success."
Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Elton John, who is preparing for a memorial concert in Stein’s memory, was also the godfather to her daughter Mandy.
"I'm absolutely shocked and upset," John said. "She's been a friend for over 37 years and will be greatly missed. She did so much for breast cancer and was a huge supporter of my AIDS Foundation."
