Aretha Franklin performed at the U.S. Capitol in Washington on January 20, 2009, due to the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. The 66-year-old “Queen of Soul” wore the most impressive hat which had been requested by many people.
Luke Song’s hat shop was assaulted by many calls asking for a model of Franklin’s hat. The singer’s hat was a grey and round-shaped one with a Swarovski rhinestone-bordered bow, which quickly made the Mr. Song Millinery hat shop very famous. The owner of it, Song, said that he hadn’t been prepared for so many calls asking for the famous hat. Many men called for it to get it for their wives and mothers, the 36-year-old Song added.
Yet, Franklin’s hat was hand-made and cost up to $500, the designer said. But it just isn’t for sale. Instead, Song offered the customers a satin ribbon of $179. Even if so many customers wanted the hat they had finally understood it had been exclusively designed for the “Queen of Soul.”
Franklin has been a customer of Mr. Song Millinery for 20 years and the shop has been working in Detroit for 25 years. Song told the Associated Press on Thursday that they use to make her hats for different events she participates in.
In addition, Franklin offered Obama more than “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” at his inauguration. Gwendolyn Quinn, the 66-year-old singer’s spokeswoman, said that she had brought the president a collection of 17 sermons by the Detroit minister the Rev. C.L. Franklin, her father. Besides this, she also gave Obama a biography of her father and a Bible "engraved with a personal message."
The First Lady, Michelle Obama, received a gold brooch with diamonds and Franklin’s grandson, Jordan, gave the two First Daughters, Malia and Sasha, a collection of Gospel/Christian hip-hop music.
