Aretha Franklin’s L.A. Performance Redeems Her ‘Queen’ Status

Aretha Franklin was shown all the respect worthy of a real queen during her performance Thursday night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, just days after her public cat-scratch with Beyonce Knowles, who introduced Tina Turner as “the queen” on the Grammy Awards night.

Wearing a pale-pink satin gown and matching wrap for the occasion, Franklin not only regained her “Queen of Soul” title in the eyes of the audience but proved she never really lost it.

The Great Lady of Soul effortlessly started her number with a jubilant version of Jackie Wilson's “Higher and Higher” followed by an appropriate “My Funny Valentine,” given a torch-to-R&B bluster treatment.

Accompanied by five backing vocalists and the large orchestra of her longtime conductor, H.B. Barnum, Franklin delivered several clear peaks, including the Ben E. King nugget “Don't Play That Song (You Lied),” Franklin's tribute to late Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun (who co-wrote it) and the religious intent of “One Night With the King.” And obviously, her signature song, the Otis Redding-penned “Respect” set the crowd off into cheers and shouts nevertheless.

The classics were winning as ever, such as “Think” and later “Chain of Fools,” which was kicked off by her son Teddy Richards on guitar.

The singer refrained from addressing the Beyonce dust-up, although Beyonce’s father, and manager lashed out again saying Franklin’s criticism of his daughter is “ridiculous,” “childish” and “unprofessional,” and he didn’t understand what the big deal was.

“And it’s a sad day when egos get bruised because somebody used the word king, queen, prince or princess,” Matthew Knowles was quoted by People as saying.
