The Google Android platform is now reaching beyond the mobile phone limits, as it will get integrated with Archos’ future ultra-thin Internet Media Tablet (IMT). The portable media player provider announced the IMT will also include the OMAP 3 platform from Texas Instruments.
Support for an Android based device represents a historical opportunity for Archos to combine all the best of our IMTs with a phone in a single device delivering high quality video and a full web experience in true mobility, said Henri Crohas, CEO and Founder of Archos.
The company said the future tabled will incorporate the Android functionality and voice support, a PC-like Internet experience, Adobe Flash and Flash Video support, TV recording and HD playback, up to 500GB of storage, 7 hours video playback, 3.5G 7.2Mb/s HSUPA, and laptop like-performance thanks to the first implementation of the OMAP3440 processor.
TI’s vice president and general manager for the OMAP business unit said in a statement that the OMAP 3 platform, which offers support for the Android OS, is a powerful tool to support HD video, high quality multimedia and connectivity anytime and anywhere.
The Android platform will offer the functionality of a premium smartphone and access to fast-developing applications environments, which combined with Archos’ multimedia framework will deliver an experience beyond regular portable media players, the company said.
Archos is marrying its rich digital media history with voice functionality to tackle new markets, the company said, confirming that the Internet Media Player tablet based on the Android platform will become available in the third quarter of 2009.
