Dell Chief Executive Michael Dell hopes to move his company
into a broader range of consumer markets. Therefore Dell has been testing a
digital music player in the last few months, according to the Wall Street Journal. The player might go on sale as early as
September 2008. Any MP3 player Dell might release will face a difficult fight
with Apple’s iPod, the absolute leader of the market.
The player is said to feature a Wi-Fi connection, a sort of
"small navigation screen" (possibly a touchscreen) and last but not
least, it is expected to be priced under $100 - cheaper than Dell's previous
line of Dell DJ products. So far not many details have been offered.
Dell attempted to break into the Apple-dominated MP3 player
market before. The company still sells some
MP3 players on its site, like Microsoft's Zune. Nevertheless they chose not to
work with Microsoft for this new device.
The creatively designed players they released initially did not appeal
to customers quite as the company had planned. But they hope the new device
will be given the appropriate improvements.
Apart from releasing a new MP3 player, Dell has been busy to
unveil its new Studio laptop series, available in seven different colors. Studio 15 has a 15.4-inch screen, while the
Studio 17 features a 17-inch screen. Both of them pack dual-core Intel Core 2 Duo
processors, they support 4GB of memory and 320GB of HD storage and they also
include wireless 802.11 b/g networking.
