Apple’s MobileMe service was launched a few days ago as an
upgrade for the company’s .Mac software. It provides Internet services for iPhone’s
and Mac’s operating systems and also for Microsoft Windows users.
After a series of technical problems, caused by the heavy
traffic, the service’s Web site, www.me.com, is now
available for all interested parties, and according to the company’s
statements, all .Mac members will be transferred automatically to MobileMe,
with their online storage doubling over the next few days. The storage option
on the company’s servers, with its 20 Giga Bytes, might turn out to be very
useful for many, as it provides a safe location for files that users consider
important or essential for their activities.
In order to benefit from the service’s features, an annual fee
of $99 must be paid and once registered, users can synchronize their mail,
contacts, calendars, Safari bookmarks, photos, plus several other features for
Macs, iPod Touch and the iPhone.
Its mail feature offers a @me.com email address, which
redirects the received emails to all of the user’s devices. The Address Book works
in a similar manner as the mail address, updating the registered contacts to
all the devices owned by the user. The public photo gallery uploads photos
through a web browser and can be synced by iPhoto on Macs or from iPhone to
iPod touch. The browsers supported by the service are: Safari 3, Firefox 2,
Internet Explorer 7 and all their updates.
The update does not include some of .Mac’s features, which
include the support for Mac OS X v10.3, iCards, .Mac slides and Web access to
bookmarks.
