Apple to Ship Touch Screen Netbooks in 2009: Report

Apple Inc. plans to launch a netbook computer that will pack a touch screen monitor and it will most likely release it this year, according to a report from Dow Jones Newswires.

According to sources close to Apple, the mini laptop will feature two sizes of monitor screens: 9.7-inches and 10-inches.

A rumor is usually followed by many other on the same subject and that unwritten rule proved itself right in this case to. Chinese newspaper Commercial Times quoted Taiwanese touch screen supplier Wintek as saying that it will work with Apple. The producer of small and medium displays is reportedly working to manufacture the touch-screen displays for Apple’s new netbooks.

The rumored-upcoming netbooks from Apple will reportedly be assembled by Quanta Computer Inc. (2382.TW), the world's largest notebook maker by revenue, the report said.

None of the two companies said anything about a timeline for when they will start producing the Apple netbooks. Only Wintek said the netbooks will most likely be ready and hit the market in the second half of 2009.

Last fall, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs said that he considers the netbooks a new market, but a market in which Apple hadn’t any plans of entering in the very near future. In early 2009, Apple COO Tim Cook said the company has its eye on the sub-$500 market, but also said that it will not step on the dance floor just yet because they aren’t sure people will buy the products.

“Some of those products are inferior and don't provide the kind of experience users are happy with," said Cook about the netbooks.

Who knows? Maybe Apple changed its mind over night.
