Although there have been some opinions hinting
to the possibility of a major recall, according to BusinessWeek, Apple intends
to take care of all the problems users have reported with regard to its iPhone
3G smartphone by releasing a software update.
So far, Apple has received numerous messages
from angry users who complained about dropped calls and who wanted to know what
the company was doing in order to solve the problem.
BusinessWeek, having received information from
two "reliable sources," said the main cause for the problem is a
communications chip manufactured by Infineon Technologies (IFX).
The sources
went on to say that only two to three percent of iPhone traffic is currently
being affected and that, while this was indeed acknowledged to be a problem, it
should not considered a catastrophe.
Infineon people chose not to comment on
the situation but said there have been no complaints about the company’s chips
which are being used in several Samsung phones.
AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel, said the way a
phone works is strongly connected to a series of factors, out of which he
mentioned one’s location with respect to the 3G coverage; he added that
coverage is very sensitive to the terrain in the area and to the buildings
surrounding the user and the carrier’s antenna.
He concluded that while there
are indeed certain individual bad experiences, generally speaking, the phone is
actually doing great.
As similar problems have been experienced by
Nokia and other European carriers when their 3G networks first became
operational, AT&T and Apple will definitely go past this situation; the one
thing everyone wants to know is when they will manage to do so.
