On Wednesday morning, Apple revealed the launch date of the
widely-expected iPhone SDK. The Cupertino
company has sent invitations to the press for an event in which it will discuss
the iPhone software roadmap and “some exciting new enterprise features”.
"Please join us to learn about the iPhone software
roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise
features," reads the invitation sent to reporters.
Announced in October 2007 by Steve Jobs himself, the iPhone
SDK, which will open the phone’s platform to the third-party developers, was
scheduled to be released this month.
“We are excited about creating a vibrant third party
developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications
for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware
and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile
platform ever for developers”, wrote Jobs in October in an announcement posted
on Apple’s web site.
With the iPhone SDK, developers can create Web 2.0
applications which look and behave just like the applications built into iPhone,
and which can seamlessly access iPhone’s services, including making a phone
call, sending an email and displaying a location in Google Maps. The iPhone does not have a chat application, for example.
The iPhone SDK will allow developers to create applications for iPod Touch.
The release of iPhone SDK may also boost the sales of Apple’s
cell phone and help the company to reach the 10 million units sold mark.
So far, Apple didn’t released any details about the iPhone
SDK, besides what Jobs wroted in his October’s message: “We are working on an
advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program
the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users
from malicious programs”. Earlier today, Apple released the 1.1.4 firmware for
iPhone, which has fixed several “undisclosed” bugs.
