As the Macworld and CES 2009 are on the verge to become history, various media reports are speculating that Apple is talking with the CES organizers to attend at CES 2010.
AppleInsider, a website dedicated to the Apple fans, is quoting sources familiar with the matter, who said that in fact Apple’s attendance at the next year’s CES is already a done deal. However, even the information is true is hard to say who would benefit most from this deal: CES or Apple?
In the last few years, Apple was actively involved in the consumer electronics market and even dropped the word “Computer” from its name. Thanks to products like iPod, iPhone, Apple TV and so on, Apple has managed to change its image from a company involved in making Macs to a provider of all kind of gadgets for electronics lovers.
However, Apple has chosen to announce its products at its own shows, like MacWorld or WWDC, instead of attending to larger computer industry conference.
In the last two or three years, Apple’s Macworld has even managed to become more interesting than CES. That’s way bringing Apple on board is a big coup for CES organizers, especially since the company already announced that it won’t attend at the next year’s Macworld.
Which brings to our attention another question: without Apple, there will be another Macworld next year? Apple explained its retirement from Macworld by saying that it doesn’t need trade shows to announce its products. Instead, the company will relay on its retail stores to announce and launch its products.
On the other hand, CES was a trade show largely dominated by Microsoft. The Redmond-based software maker has a long history of making all kind of announcements at CES. Only in the past three years, Microsoft has announced at CES Windows Vista, Windows Media Center and even Bill Gates formally announced his retirement from his day-to-day duties at Microsoft at CES 2008.
With Apple attending at CES 2010, the two rivals will have to face each other and it will be interesting to see who will be chosen to deliver the main keynote.
Although is hard to believe that Apple will really attend at CES, one thing is certain: it will be interesting to see Apple and Microsoft in the same turf.
