Apple finally sued Psystar, a newcomer company which manufactures Mac clones. Apple asked that all computers that have already been sold by Psystar should be recalled.

The fact that Apple will file a copyright infringement lawsuit was something that most people expected, since Apple has both the financial power to do so, and a lot to lose if Psystar was allowed to carry on with its business. And if Apple’s plead that all the computers sold should be recalled is one of the few things that might guarantee that what Psystar did will not be attempted by others, it is also a rather unlikely thing to happen.

Product recalls are usually asked when the products are potentially dangerous for the people who use them, and are usually authorized by government agencies. In Apple’s case, the recall would reduce the risk of the technology being used to fall in the hands of people who might attempt to do the same thing that Psystar did.

Psystar, which is based in Florida, started selling Mac clones in April this year. The company managed to modify the Mac Leopard operating system and managed to get it to run on Intel-based computers. Apple clearly states that nobody is allowed to run its operating systems on devices other than the ones produced by Apple.

Psystar replied that it does not consider Apple’s policy to be one that the jury would approve to. According to The New York Times, a spokesman of the company who gave only his surname said “What if Honda said that after you buy their car, you could only drive it on the roads they said you could?”

Of course, there is little chance that Psystar will win the lawsuit, but Apple will most probably have to prepare for more such incidents.
