As much as one would love adding tons of apps to his/her iPhone, it is undeniably annoying not being able to run them as background processes. But Apple might have a change of heart on that, and allow third party software to become available as background processes as well, eliminating the obligation to close them in order to open a new one.
MacRumors reported that while Apple has taken its time to introduce the promised push feature in its smartphone, it could consider the background alternative, which would be a great asset for certain services such as Instant Messaging.
If the last firmware update failed to bring any of those changes, the iPhone 3.0 software update might do the trick, the same source notes.
However, even so, the feature would be limited to running only one or two processes at the time, due to performance limitations in the current iPhone hardware. But this is not the time to despair, since Apple could fix that by releasing a new generation of iPhones.
Apple has not made any comments so far, but it’s only natural for people to wonder what will come out of the promised push notification service, which the company initially presented as the ideal solution. The push service would normally allow an application to run, but it would interrupt it when for example receiving an instant message.
That method would also imply less resource consumption, and a good compromise solution, according to Apple. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter that much which of these solutions will be chosen, iPhone users want their multitasking one way or the other!
