Today, Apple’s new MobileMe is scheduled for release,
bringing several updates to its .Mac service predecessor. The scene is set for
the launch and it will take place between 6 p.m. and 12 a.m. PT which might
lead to a system disruption during that time.
"As part of the MobileMe launch, www.mac.com will be
taken offline at 6 p.m. PT on Wednesday, July 9th," says a note on the
company's Web site.
"MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance
window."
The upgrade brings a whole new online interface, Apple’s
popular features such as Mail, iCal and Address Book, received a brush off and
also the company developed push support for e-mail accounts, contacts, events
and photos.
MobileMe will also offer over-the-air syncing of events,
calendar, mail applications and contacts features for iPhone users.
The upgrade from .Mac will be made automatically and over
the next 10 days (as Apple announced) the storage space will double. Users will
still be able to access their mac.com addresses, as all stored files and e-mail
addresses will not be affected by the change.
There are some services featured on .Mac which will no
longer be accessible with MobileMe, including Web bookmarks and .Mac’s slides
publisher.
The price for a one-year subscription to MobileMe will be of
$99 for a single person, just as the .Mac’s, and will include 20 Giga Bytes of
e-mail and storage space. The second plan, offering a family pack, will provide
40 GB of space for one individual and four family members.
