Apple Revises Policy Regarding 3rd Party Applications on AppStore

Apple decided to change its view on 3rd party application which are allowed on AppStore. As with the company’s permissive policy, several applications, including iFart Mobile and Pull My Finger, which were previously banned from the store, are now available for download.

However, Apple is still very restrictive with applications with pornographic-related content, as iBoobs was recently put out of the AppStore because it contained “inappropriate content.” Users praised the fact that Apple decided to be more tolerant and let other types of content to be available on AppStore but, on the other hand, many of them requested further changes. This is because AppStore still doesn’t allow 3rd party developers to release applications that might compete with Apple’s own.

By sanctioning applications like iBoobs and iFart, Apple in fact boosted their popularity as much as iFart came first in the Top 100 of all-time downloaded applications on AppStore. According to the top 10 list, iFart is now more popular than Tetris and SimCity. Costing $0.99, the developers of the application had an income of about $10,000 in the first day of the release.

While users are now able to find a new “genre” of applications on AppStore, many of them will be disappointed because Apple does not want any 3rd party software that could compete with the company’s own apps for the iPhone. This means that users won’t be able to download other web browsers, like Opera Mini nor other media players. Furthermore, both users and developers criticize Apple for not detailing its criteria regarding application approval, as it only states that AppStore would not host applications with “objectionable content.”

Even though AppStore has some flaws in its approval policy, it is clear that Apple managed to deliver a unique experience, as any iPhone user can personalize their device with just a few clicks. More than that, AppStore is also a commercial success, as there have been 300 million downloads and 10,000 applications available since the platform was released, 5 months ago.
