Apple has recently released a firmware update for the new MacBook and MacBook Pro owners bedeviled by their glass trackpads. The update should fix an issue with the new trackpads unveiled by Apple in October, which replace the traditional trackpad/mouse button combination with a trackpad that also serves as the button.
Unfortunately, the first owners of this system reported a persistent problem in which click on the trackpad would not register. The update should be appearing in Software Update for owners of the new systems today.
Users were afraid that they would have to return their Macs in order to solve the problem, and that’s because it’s a hardware problem. However, it’s good to hear a simple firmware fix is all that’s required to remedy the issue. Furthermore, users hope this will be the last time they will be experiencing such hardware faults that hit newly refreshed laptops, especially as on every other front the design is fantastic and the button-less trackpad is brilliant (multi-touch is far less of a gimmick than it might sound). The firmware update acts like a plain calibration fix and it’s quite odd, because a firmware update normally requires a restart.
It should be pointed out that it’s quite difficult to calibrate a trackpad to work perfectly. A user must follow the instructions in the update application in order to complete the update process. In addition, the update will push through automatically, but it can also be hit manually if a user hurries to enjoy its trackpad error-free. The update can also be downloaded from Apple’s site.
