Apple Inc launched on Wednesday a new, tinier version of its iPod Shuffle music player. The new version of the device that also packs a feature that tells the user the song that is playing, is the smallest iPode ever made.
For a price of $79 has a 4-gigabyte memory which means it can store about 1,000 songs, twice the amount users can store in the last generation of iPod.
To make it even more practical, Apple moved all the controls of the iPod Shuffle to its earphone cord. But the most interesting new feature is the voice that announces the songs and play lists. The VoiceOver feature is available in 14 different languages. The feature is very useful considering the fact that the iPod Shuffle does not have a display screen like most music players.
And when Apple says small, it means it. The iPod Shuffle is 1.8 inches tall and only 0.3 inches thick. Even smaller than a AA battery.
The VoiceOver feature can be activated in iTunes during initial setup or from iTunes' Device Summary. Once the user activates VoiceOver, iTunes will install VoiceOver Kit software on the computer and will sync messages to the device in the specified language.
To hear the title of the song or the name of the play list, users must click the Center button until they hear a tone, then they must release to switch the play list menu.
The news of the iPod Shuffle release sent the Apple shares 4.5 percent up.
"It won't necessarily stimulate sales, but it clearly will keep sales of the Shuffle going forward," said Needham & Co analyst Charles Wolf, Reuters reported.
