Apple Planning New AppStore Section for Premium Games?

According to the blog PocketGamer.biz, which was the first to report the news, Apple Incorporated is planning a new section of the AppStore aimed at premium game titles, which is said to be dedicated to games that sell for approximately $20.

The site also said that the new section would only target games of large publishers, given that many of the ones coming from smaller gaming developers were already being offered to users via the main AppStore.

Moreover, it has been rumored that Apple was to announce the section at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) to take place in June.

Presently, the AppStore offers over 1,500 games, which exceeds the number of games provided by Sony's PlayStation Portable and Nintendo DS combined, which are Apple’s main rivals in the handheld gaming market.

Furthermore, games make for the most sought after type of app in the AppStore, also accounting for about 25 percent of all the titles on the market.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPhone and iPod product marketing, stated that the fact that the AppStore did not require game developers to have a publisher was one of the most important benefits offered by the service.

Still, the AppStore has often come into criticism, developers having claimed that its Top 100 list was prone to include cheaper but higher-volume applications.
