Apple announced today that the iTunes video store also offers HD videos for download. Users are allowed to download the videos available in store. To purchase a HD movie you must pay $19.99, but you can also rent it for $4.99, available within 30 days of the film's release, and old titles for $3.99.
For the moment there are only about a dozen HD movies available for download such as Transporter 3, The Spirit, The Punisher: War Zone, Quantum Of Solace and vampire movie Twilight. But the number of HD movies available for rent is of about 1200 and growing.
Apple said it will soon add numerous other HD movies to the store. The HD movies from the iTunes can be played on an Apple Mac, iPhone, some iPod models, and on Windows-running PCs as well.
Users can also watch the HD movies through the Apple T set-top box. In fact, the HD content was announced at Macworld Expo 2006 when the Apple TV Take Two update and the launch of movie rentals were first announced.
"Movie fans are going to love being able to buy and rent films including 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Twilight' in stunning HD form the iTunes Store," said Apple Internet Services vice president Eddy Cue.
"Customers have made HD content on iTunes a hit, with over 50 percent of TV programming being purchased in HD when available," he added.
However, Apple isn’t the only company that offers HD content for download. With other players such as Netflix and Blockbuster in the game, the competition is going to get tougher and tougher to the benefit of the final customer.
