Apple Offers Double Capacity iPhone, iPod Touch

Apple Inc. has announced a new lineup of their iPhone and iPod Touch offerings which feature double storage capacities. This means that the new iPhone has 16 gigabytes of memory instead of only 8 gigabytes installed on the previous model. The memory upgrade comes at a price: one hundred bucks. Thus the 16 gig iPhone is priced by Apple at $499 while de 8 gig model is priced $399.

As far as the iPod Touch is concerned, it now comes with a substantial 32 gigabytes of memory and is priced the same as the premium iPhone, at $499. The previously released 16 and 8 gigabytes models are priced accordingly, at $399 and $299 respectively.

"For some users, there's never enough memory," Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of worldwide iPod and iPhone product marketing, said in an official Apple statement. "Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world," he wrote.

The new 16-gig iPhones and 32-gig iPods Touch are available as of now in Apple's online store and shortly in retail stores. Of course, they came preloaded with the latest firmware, the one which provides the ability to edit the home screen and triangulate your position using Maps.

Apple expects to sell 10 million iPhones during 2008, boosted by the launches in Asia and other European countries, a new highly expected 3G model, and a significant number new applications delivered in February alongside the release of the software developer's kit. Apple could also use price cuts to up sales.

However, Apple has problems with reaping profits off the iPhone, as a significant number of buyers have unlocked the devices and prevented their maker from benefiting further from their use on Apple's exclusive carriers.

Last month, AT&T, Apple's exclusive partner for the United States, rolled out a new iPhone business plan offers pretty much the same features as for regular users, with data and voicemail services, but comes with a minimum two-year service agreement, and some pricier text message and voice plans than for regular consumers: $45 a month for 200 text messages, compared to just $20 for normal users, $55 a month for 1,500 text messages and $65 a month for unlimited texting.
