If the first thoughts when buying an iPhone 3G were
something like “it’s really worth waiting in line for this,” some owners now
begin to believe it would have been better to just go get a cup of coffee (this
would have given them less headaches).
Apple is hoping for crazy iPhone 3G sales, but it does
little to encourage even more people to buy it. The company seems to be unable to
fix a recently reported glitch that has been linked to dropped calls and
unstable data connections.
This week, Apple came up, as promised, with a firmware
update (version 2.02), nut unfortunately, it did pretty much nothing to fix the connection
issues, and in some cases, even created a whole new set of problems that did
not exist prior to the patching.
So what are we waiting for now is a patch to fix the patch,
and perhaps an explanation from Apple (I think they owe that much to their
users.)
Apple spokeswoman Jennifer Bowcock told U.S.A Today: “The
software update improves communication with 3G network.” So the software update
was not intended to fix a chipset problem in the first place. That isn’t
surprising considering Apple’s refusal to admit there is a problem with the 3G
chipsets produced by German company Infineon Technologies.
As if the dropped calls and data connection problems weren’t
enough, Apple now has to work on another software update, which they promised
to deliver in September, this time to fix a bug that prevents the 2.0 firmware
from loading non-default applications.
The strange thing however is that despite all these
glitches, starting with MobileMe and continuing with all the iPhone problems, Apple
continues to top customer-satisfaction lists over rival companies.
