Starting today, the iPhone’s App store finally features the
highly debated Google Mobile App, which enables users to conduct Web searches using
voice requests. For the past few days, the only details about the app were the
ones presented through a video demonstration posted on YouTube, which showed its
basic uses and features.
The app was designed to significantly speed up the search
process, in order to save the users’ time and also make sure that this is done
in a fun and easy to understand way. Once a user pushes the search button, he is
free to continue the process by using voice requests that manage to provide
some very good results. Even though the success rate is not 100 percent, most
of the searches will turn out with many useful results and according to the
first reviews, the best rate of success is acquired by users with a
North-American accent; Google might take into consideration adding the service
in other languages also – but such aspects depend on the level of popularity
that the app will reach over the next few months.
Once a certain search term is queried, Google’s servers
receive the information and identify the word, which is then entered as a
search term. In order to make sure that the offered results are as good as they
can be, there must be as little background noise as possible when dealing with
the speakerphone.
The fun factor is also extremely important, as there will be
many downloading it just to enjoy a new feature on their iPhone, without any
interest in saving time with their searches. Google came out of the partnership
looking extremely well, as it had the option to wait and develop the app for
its own G1 smartphone. Still, considering that the iPhone has a significantly
bigger user base, Google decided to allow a wider audience to enjoy the results
of its work and this is why the iPhone was chosen as the first device to use
the service.
There have been some concerns about the company’s approval
process, which made Google postpone its initial release plans. It is a well
known fact that Apple has a strict verification process for every single feature
that is let inside its App Store, and just as the rest, Google had to wait its
turn. There have been some developers extremely disappointed with this policy
and announced that their efforts will be focused from now on other platforms,
where they have the certainty that their work is appreciated.
Aside from the voice recognition capabilities, the Google
Mobile App also connects users to all the other Google features including
Gmail, Google News, Google Maps and so on. It is expected to significantly
boost the sales of Apple’s product and it will also represent a good
opportunity to see how it will be received by the public, analyze and fix the
issues signaled by users and prepare a significantly improved version for next
year.
