Through large adverts in The New York Times and The Wall
Street Journal, Apple announced on Friday that its App Store recorded over 300
million downloads. These are impressive figures as the store opened just five
months ago. Also, the company announced that the App Store now hosts more than
10,000 applications.
As the top-downloads list shows, people are mostly looking
for entertainment applications and games. Along with them, there are also other
well-liked applications, such as Facebook, Google Earth and Pandora, an Internet
radio streaming app. Other than that, it looks like even business and
productivity-oriented applications start to have an uprising popularity, as the
new iPhone 3G was released.
The huge number of downloads is justified by the fact that
Apple integrated its App Store with iTunes, therefore browsing, downloading and
installing applications are always just a few clicks away. Anyhow, downloads don’t
fully reflect Apple’s revenue, since some of the applications are free. The
Silicon Valley Insider estimated a $50-100 million profit for the company. Even
though Apple’s income isn’t impressive, its popularity surely is. Estimating
that there are over 20 million iPhones and iPod touches sold worldwide, it
means that, in average, every user has downloaded about 10 applications, more
than any other mobile device user does. Speaking about the remarkable figures,
Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, said: "We've never seen anything like this in our
careers."
For the next year, Apple’s expectation for the App Store is $1
billion revenue, a realistic approach, considering the new devices that are to
be released and the general appeal Apple created around itself since the company
began the iPhone madness.
