Actor Anthony Edwards, one of the original cast members of
the NBC hospital drama “ER,” is to reprise his role as Dr. Mark Greene in an
episode of the 15th and final season of the television series.
The now-deceased character will appear in flashback scenes
with actress Angela Bassett, who was previously announced to join the “ER” cast
for the show’s upcoming final season, the General Electric Co.-owned network
said on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Anthony Edwards, 46, initially appeared in the 1994 pilot
episode of “ER” and stayed with the drama for eight seasons until his chief
attending physician persona died from brain cancer in May 2002.
Although NBC did not reveal much about Edwards’ return to
“ER,” it announced that his comeback will take place in an episode titled “Heal
Thyself,” due to air on November 13, which will include a series of scenes with
Angela Bassett “that will feature other characters from the show’s past.”
The landmark TV series, set on the hallways of the fictional
County General
Hospital in Chicago,
was the top-rated show on U.S.
television for several years, but ratings have nevertheless dropped in the past
few years.
An NBC spokesman said that the episode featuring Anthony
Edwards would begin filming next week, but gave no information on who else
might be appearing in the respective installment of the show, Reuters reported.
The network also announced that Noah Wyle, one of Edwards’
original “ER” co-stars, would return to the show, which won an Emmy Award for
best drama series in 1996, playing Dr. John Carter in four episodes of the
upcoming 15th season.
However, George Clooney, one of the most important figures
of the series, was not mentioned. The actor left the regular cast in 1999 in
order to focus on his movie career. He did return nonetheless for a surprise
cameo in May 2000 to mark the departure of six-season-running star Julianna
Margulies.
