Another YouTube Rival Comes To Life: PluggedIn

Another rival prepares to challenge YouTube by bringing high-quality online videos to users through a new website, PluggedIn, backed up by Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment. As of Wednesday, music videos from three major music companies, Universal, Sony BMG and EMI, will become available on the website, together with artist profiles, as well as useful links.

"Until now, watching HD or even broadcast quality music videos on the web has been nearly impossible,” said Jeff Somers, CEO of PluggedIn. Today we're announcing a major step forward in the way that fans can connect with the high quality content and artists that matter most to them. We're focused on building a unique experience for fans - a place where they can meet and interact with each other, and where they can enjoy, discover and share premium quality video content."

PluggedIn started off with 10,000 music videos belonging to the three major music labels, as well as to independent music labels, and will include artists like Radiohead, Joss Stone, Green Day, 30 Seconds to Mars, Coldplay, Gorillaz, Chemical Brothers, Norah Jones, Daft Punk, KT Tunstall, and Keith Urban, as well as talented emerging artists such as Matt Nathanson and The Kooks.

The website will also include over 1 million artist profiles, updated in real time. A search of a favorite artist will display videos, photos, playlists, news, blogs, bios, recommendations and more, the Santa Monica company said.

"The experience that the PluggedIn team has created is truly world-class," said Guy Primus, Head of Interactive Media at Overbrook. "They've reshaped the way people will enjoy music online by combining high-definition video with personalization, social networking and e-commerce tools. The fact that they've built all of this to be replicated across entertainment categories is even more remarkable, and we look forward to working with them on a variety of initiatives."
