Here come the grooms. “Star Trek’s” Mr. Sulu married his
boyfriend of more than two decades on Sunday, in a Los Angeles ceremony which was attended by
approximately 200 people.
George Takei, 71, and his business manager, Brad Altman, 54,
said “I do” during a Buddhist ceremony held at the Japanese American National
Museum, where other “Star Trek” ex-castmembers were also present, including
best man Walter Koenig (“Chekhov”) and matron of honor Nichelle Nichols
(“Uhura”).
“May equality live long and prosper!” George Takei told the
guests while he was leaving the ceremony. “I can add ‘my husband’ to the list
of things I call you,” the actor said in his vows, which went on after the
couple was positioned in the middle of a circle made of yellow roses. “I vow to
care for you as you’ve cared for me…and to love you as my husband and the only
man in my life,” he added, according to E! Online.
When same sex marriages were authorized by California’s
Supreme Court, the former “Enterprise”
helmsman was among the first stars to make his future wedding public.
The fresh husbands reportedly plan to spend their honeymoon
in South America.
George Takei and Brad Altman made it official following
another much talked about couple who tied the knot. Ellen DeGeneres and actress
Portia de Rossi married in mid-August at their Los Angeles home and it seems that they
already set the trend.
“Our California
dream is reality. Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long
last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn
down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!” the “Star Trek” actor wrote
on his Web site earlier this year.
Most recently, the star of Japanese descent filled the shoes
of Hiro Nakamura’s father, Kaito Nakamura, on the NBC TV show “Heroes.”
