Sony issued a recall for some of its VAIO VGN-TZ100, VGN-TZ200, VGN-TZ300, and VGN-TZ2000 series of laptops, over serious overheating issues caused by a manufacturing flaw. It appears that irregularly positioned wires near the hinge of the notebooks and/or a screw inside the hinge could dislodge and cause short circuits and overheating. The machines are manufactured in Japan and United States.
Around 373,000 of the Vaio laptops were sold worldwide in some 48 countries, with 67,000 sold in Japan. The number of recalled laptops sold in the United States is 72,800, a Sony spokesman said. Sony has allegedly received 15 reports of overheating, including one consumer who suffered a minor burn.
Sony said in a statement that U.S. customers should contact the company toll-free at (888) 526-6219 or visit the firm’s Web site at www.sony.com/support.
In early August, Sony recalled its DSC-T5 digital cameras, which can cause scratches or cuts to their owners. The culprit is the bottom casing which can cut or scratch the user's hands, the company said. The number of digital cameras being recalled surpasses 350,000 and Sony will replace the plating for free.
This issue affects only DSC-T5 model Cyber-shot digital still cameras with serial numbers between 3500001 and 3574100. Sony will cover all costs associated with shipping.
